Tiers of Positive Interventions and Supports
Tier 2 Overview:
Tier 2 supports students with At-Risk behavior, is individualized, and targets the student's needs. Students work on improving their behavior or social skills in a small group for re-teaching the desired behavior. Students get to practice the behavior to reinforce positive habits and following expectations. As students learn to consistently display the expected behavior the supports are faded away followed by the return to Tier 1 if applicable.
How do students move to Tier 2? Most students are responsive to Tier 1 but some need a little more support that targets the problem behavior.
- Students who enroll after the first 3 weeks of the new school year will participate in Tier 2 Check-In-Check-Out for the first 2-5 days as an orientation to school expectations, procedures, and school locations.
- Student who receives 2 or more office discipline referrals
- Student who has more than 5 absences in a 30-day period
- If there are concerns regarding a student's mental health, anti-social behavior, or serious family support concerns
- Student is on a 504 plan
- Student, teacher, or family request
Tier 2 is organized by documenting that Tier 1 was implemented with fidelity for the student, however the student's behavior continues to be "off track" when meeting school-wide and classroom expectations. The student begins to receive Tier 2 supports in a timely manner with a goal of success in at least 6 weeks. Tier 2 strategies are implemented in small groups or individually based on the student's needs. Data is gathered daily and monitored to make adjustments to intensify, fade, or no change to supports being used. All decisions are based on the student's behavioral data.
When the student meets the behavior goal(s) supports can begin to fade. Usually when the student has been successful 4 days a week for at least 6 weeks, supports can start to fade and the student has a self-management plan in place to be successful and graduate off Tier 2 (Horner et.al).
